Agüero Given Scant Reward For His Effort

Agüero Given Scant Reward For His Effort

Sergio Agüero endured a long journey in order to make his full debut for Argentina and then only played for the final minute of the encounter.

The Atlético de Madrid striker was called up by Alfio Basile for the friendly encounter in Australia and the 19-year-oldwas relishing his chance to prove himself at the highest level.

After travelling 17,297 kilometres to appear in the game in Melbourne, Agüero was only able to appear as a substitute in the 90th minute as Leo Messi's replacement.

Argentina won the game 1-0 thanks to a goal from Martin Demichelis, but Atlético will not be pleased that their player was gone for so long for such little reward.

Agüero did not enjoy a long summer break as he appeared in the Under-20 World Championships in Canada and then returned to Madrid early to appear in the Intertoto Cup.

It was his performances in the Under-20 tournament that earned the former Independiente goalscorer a call-up, but Basile did not give him enough to show anything of his ability.

His dedication will have impressed the national coach, however, and should see him selected in the Albiceleste's next squad.
